Jessie Powell

Powell, Jessie Mary Short, passed from this earth on May 30, 2020 at the age of 95. She was born on August 27, 1924 in GoodSprings Alabama. Her parents were Clarence and Jessie (Alexander) Short. She attended Parrish High School and was the Salutatorian in her graduating class. She volunteered during World War II which led to her attending Nursing School at Peoples Hospital. Over her long career in nursing she worked as a nurse in Jasper in a doctor’s office, at Mobile Infirmary and Suburban Hospitals in Mobile, Greene County Hospital in Eutaw and Greene Country and Shelby County Health Departments. She retired as Director of Nurses with Shelby County Health Department. The visitation will be Thursday, June 4, 2020 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Bolton Funeral Home. The funeral Service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Nathan Brackeen officiating. Burial will follow at Goodsprings Church of Christ Cemetery in Goodsprings, Al. Bolton Funeral Home is directing. Jessie was married to James W. Powell for sixty one years until his death in 2011 at the age of 88. They had two children, Joseph M. Powell (Rhonda) of Dothan, Alabama and Kathryn Crawford (Clayton) of Trussville, Alabama. She leaves behind five grandchildren, Jodi Powell Jones (Brandon) Christina Powell , Justin Crawford, Alex Crawford and Hunter Crawford as well as six great grandchildren, Laura Grace Jones, Avery Jones, Hayes Jones, Colby Auten, Caleb Auten and Christian Auten. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and four bothers, Elbert Alexander Short, Kyle Leslie Short, Daniel Alvie Short and Grady Alfred Short and granddaughter-in-law Virginia Humphrey Crawford. Jessie was an avid gardener and was well known for her beautiful flowers. She made flower arrangements from her yard every Sunday to display at church services for many years. She was a devoted member of the Wilsonville Church of Christ. Jessie was loved and respected by all who knew her and will be missed but her influence will live on. The family would like to thank the many friends and caregivers who provided support during the past few years, especially her Wilsonville church family.
