Cheryl L. Fawal

Cheryl Thompson Fawal, age 72, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away on September 1, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family and friends. Cheryl was born on December 31, 1953, in Columbiana, Alabama, to Billy and Mary Ann Dorough Thompson. After graduating from Shelby County High School, she pursued a career devoted to caring for others, earning her nursing degree from Saint Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing. For Cheryl, nursing was far more than a profession—it was a calling. Throughout her career as a registered nurse, she brought skill, compassion, and comfort to countless patients and their families. The many lives she touched throughout her years of service are a lasting testament to her generous spirit and her desire to care for others. Outside of nursing, Cheryl found great joy in making life beautiful and bringing people together. She loved every holiday and especially enjoyed decorating her home and hosting family and friends. Some of the happiest memories shared by those who loved her were made by gathering at Cheryl’s home and around her pool, where there was always room for family, laughter, and time together. Cheryl was also a talented artist with a natural eye for beauty and creativity. Whether through her artwork, her decorating, or the thoughtful way she made her home welcoming to others, her creativity was an important part of who she was. She was also a devoted animal lover and had a particular affection for the many cats she loved and cared for throughout her life. Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents, Billy and Mary Ann Dorough Thompson; her beloved husband, Salem Fawal; and her brother, Ronald Thompson. She is survived by her brother, Michael Thompson (Joy), as well as a large and loving extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins, along with many dear friends who were an important part of her life. Cheryl’s family is especially grateful for the love and devotion shown to her by her beloved sisters-in-law, Gina Fawal Jaber, Freeda Fawal-Farah, and Rima Fawal Hartman; her caregiver, Cynthia Godhigh; and the extended family and friends who surrounded Cheryl with love, comfort, companionship, and care over the years. Their presence in her life was a true gift. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 4, 2026 at Bolton Funeral Home, with Reverend Mike Miller officiating. The family will receive friends at 10:00, with the funeral service beginning at 11:00.
