Dr. David E Luellen, age 89, of Birmingham, passed away on April 25, 2026. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 at 2:00 PM at K-Springs Cemetery. Bolton Funeral Home is directing. Life is a journey filled with lessons, and some people dedicate their entire lives to sharing knowledge with others. David E. Luellen was one of those remarkable individuals. His commitment to education, service, and faith inspired many and left a lasting impact on countless lives around the world. David’s journey began in the halls of Harbor Creek High School, where he built a strong foundation for his future. After graduating, he pursued a PhD and became a world-renowned educator. His dedication to learning did not just stop at his own education; it extended to teaching others. In the Navy, he influenced students in countries like China, Vietnam, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan and throughout South America proving that education knows no borders. His passion for teaching was evident not only in the classroom but also through his work at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where he helped develop the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program. Dr. Luellen’s impact on education was profound. Known as “Dr. L,” in the Shelby county school systems he brought joy and enthusiasm into every lesson with his motto, “Every day is a holiday!” His engaging teaching style connected with students from diverse backgrounds and inspired them to strive for excellence. The countless lives he touched serve as a powerful reminder that education can change lives and shape futures. Family played a significant role in David's life. He is preceded in death by his loving parents Frances and Frances Luellen and brothers James F. Luellen and Bui Thi Luellen, whose memories shaped him into the person he became. He is survived by his sister, Bonnie, and his son, Hassan, along with his devoted wife, Shareen His grandchildren, Sara Ahmed, and Noor , and several nieces and nephews admired him deeply, seeing him not just as a grandfather but as a friend and mentor. David cherished family gatherings filled with stories and laughter, creating bonds that will never fade. As family and friends come together to honor Dr. Luellen’s memory, they celebrate a life dedicated to education, compassion, and service. His words of faith remind everyone that he faced death without fear, “ I want my family and friends to know that I have no fear of death because I have the blessed assurance that having belleved on the Son I will not experience the wrath of God but will have everlasting life. Moreover, I know that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. John 3:36 and Il Corinthlans 5:8”. In remembering David E.
