Robert Ellis Flaherty

Robert “Bob” Ellis Flaherty, age 89, of Chelsea, passed away on May 29, 2023. A visitation will be held on Friday, June 2, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Liberty Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM. Rev. Bill Smith is presiding and Bolton Funeral Home is directing. He will be laid to rest at Liberty Cemetery. Robert was born to Roland William Flaherty and Bess Pearl Aycock on January 12, 1934, in Memphis, Tennessee. The family moved to Birmingham then settled in Montgomery, Alabama where he attended Sidney Lanier High School. Upon graduation from high school, he attended Auburn University (API) and graduated in 1956 with a degree in accounting. He honorably served in the United States Navy for two years. Bob met and soon married Sue Alford on April 4th, 1959. Their union was blessed with two children. Bob was an accountant for Blount Construction Company for the majority of his career. He was a project accountant on many jobs including the Hannibal Lock on the Ohio River, and the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The family moved back to Montgomery and Bob assumed the role of internal auditor on jobs in Iran, King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and numerous jobs in the US. Blount Construction Company was acquired by Caddell Construction Company in 1994 and after a few years with Caddell, Bob retired in 1996. Bob loved jazz music, traveling, tennis, Auburn football and basketball, and spending time with his grandchildren. Bob and Sue traveled to numerous countries in his retirement. He loved playing in various tennis leagues in Montgomery and Birmingham. Bob was preceded in death by his father: Roland Flaherty; and his mother Bess Flaherty. He is survived by his wife of 64 years: Sue; his children: Bonnie Turner (Jack) and Robert Flaherty Jr. (Jane); his grandchildren: Jordan Russell (Anna), Anna Bisch (Travis), Dana Morson (Clark) Paige Collier (Robb), Jessica Flaherty, Hayley Beiswenger (Erik), Megan Flaherty, Jordan White, and Holden White; and his great grandchildren: Drew Russell, Connor Russell, Barrett Bisch, and Miles Morson.
