September 10, 1928 - March 24, 2021
Blonnie Lenora Vanderslice, age 92, passed away Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at her home in Shelby, Alabama surrounded by her loved ones. She is preceded in death by her husband, Duran Vanderslice; her daughter, Blonnie Vanderslice; her father, Douglas Whitten; her mother, Bell Whitten; and her brother and four sisters. She is survived by her two daughters: Teresa Vanderslice Dollar and Duann Thistlethwaite (Jamie); three grandchildren: Teneal Smith (Joey), Tonya Miller (Wesley), and Duran Dollar (Bethany); five great grandchildren: Evan Smith, Jonavan Smith, Nealie Smith, Weston Miller, and Ella Miller; and a host of other relatives. Lenora married the love of her life, Duran Vanderslice, on April 6, 1946. They shared 21 amazing years together before his death in 1967. She then devoted her entire life to taking care of her family and enjoyed every moment to the fullest. She loved to travel all across the U.S. and even had the opportunity to visit four other countries. Wherever she went, she never met a stranger, entertaining all with her many stories. She was always ready to try anything with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren – snow skiing in her 50s and again in her 70s, whitewater rafting in her 60s, and boat riding on Lay Lake in her 90s. She loved being outside and was never idle, even if it was just picking up sticks. At any wedding or special event, she could likely be found on the dance floor doing the Twist. She was also one of the best cooks in the world – known for her delicious chocolate pie, coconut cake, German chocolate cake, fried potatoes, famous grilled cheese sandwich, and chicken and dressing. Her family was very blessed to have 92 wonderful years with her and will cherish the fond memories made with “Ma-Ma” forever. Her visitation will be from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m., Saturday, March 27, 2021 at Bay Springs Baptist Church in Shelby, Alabama. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. at the church with Dr. Mike Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Bay Springs Cemetery. Bolton Funeral Home is directing.
